The Hicks Fancy mulberry is a lovely old shade tree which has small elongated red berries on it, cropping late August and into September, coming in the ‘hungry time’ in the garden when there is not a lot else around, so fills a gap nicely. My children like to stand at the tree and just stuff them into their mouths, but the fruit are more often made into a rich sweet jam which becomes thick like toffee if cooked extra long. Good drought tolerance once established
